About Me

Headshot of Kourtney DeBoer, LMFT

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, which means I am a mental health professional trained in psychotherapy and relational systems. I am specifically licensed by California, Virginia, and Washington states and the District of Columbia to diagnose and treat mental health disorders within the context of various relationship systems. With additional certifications as a Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) and a Shame-Informed Treatment Specialist (CSTS), I bring a wealth of experience and expertise to my practice at Cultivating Capacity.

I hold a B.S. in Psychology from the University of La Verne, with a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, which has fueled my commitment to understanding and addressing the unique needs of women and gender and sex minorities. Furthering my knowledge, I obtained an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego, equipping me with the skills and tools to support individuals and families on their journey towards healing, connectedness, and growth. Additionally, I hold an M.Sc. in Psychology and the Neuroscience of Mental Health from King's College London, deepening my understanding of the intricate workings of the brain and its impact on mental well-being

In my free time, I enjoy hiking, kayaking, outdoor photography, weightlifting, quilting, painting, antiquing, and volunteering with animal rescue organizations.

Areas of Expertise

With over a decade of clinical experience, I specialize in working with women, gender and sex minorities, military families, dynamic partner and family units, survivors of sexual and relational violence, and generational family trauma. My practice is rooted in a compassionate, holistic approach that integrates the clinical art of psychotherapy and the neuroscience of mental health. This means that I address not only diagnosable mental health conditions like anxiety and depression, but also relational challenges such as marital discord, navigating modern dating and family dynamics, and developing lasting and meaningful relationships in all areas of life.

Collaborative & Integrative Approach

I believe that therapy is a collaborative journey, where my clients and I work together to uncover strengths, foster resilience, and create positive and lasting change. My training in integrative care allows me to draw from various therapeutic modalities and evidence-based practices to tailor treatment specifically to each individual's unique needs. This is known as a person-centered approach.

I was also trained in the Narrative Therapy model by Dr. Erin Falvey-Hogue while interning at Narrative Contemporary Therapy. Narrative Therapy focuses on the way people construct and tell the stories of their lives. Sometimes, the way we tell our stories - both to ourselves and others - can create additional challenges. Together, we will open new books, close old chapters, and find ways to tell your life story in a way that serves you best.

Transformative Empowerment

My goal is to empower you to embrace your agency, cultivate self-compassion, and unlock your inner strength. Through a compassionate and non-judgmental therapeutic environment, I create a safe space for exploration, self-reflection, and growth. Together, we will navigate the complexities of your life, heal from past wounds, and develop practical skills to navigate relationships, overcome challenges, and live a life aligned with your values and purpose.

It would be an honor to join you on your journey of self-discovery, healing, and empowerment. Take the first step towards transformation by reaching out to schedule a consultation. Together, let's cultivate your capacity for change and create a life of resilience, joy, and fulfillment.
