About Cultivating Capacity

& Kourtney DeBoer, LMFT

I'm Kourtney DeBoer, and I founded this practice after noticing a pattern: intelligent, capable people leaving therapy more confused than when they arrived. At Cultivating Capacity, I’ve built something different. Here, you’ll find transparency, collaboration, and deep respect for your lived experiences. This is a space where your full story, including your identity, creativity, relationships, body, and voice, is welcome and deeply honored. This is therapy that respects your depth, invites your truth, and invests in your transformation.

Purpose + Passion

My Approach to Therapy

Imagine going to the dentist for a toothache. They take some X-rays, poke around, and tell you come back next week. No diagnosis, no discussion. When you return, they immediately start performing a root canal. Terrifying, right?

All too often, therapy is like that. The clinician asks intimate questions, then starts a treatment you didn’t consent to for a problem they didn’t explain.

I knew there had to be a better way. That’s why I create treatment plans personalized to each client. It’s also why I work collaboratively: I share all treatment plans with you so we can shape them together and adjust them along the way.

Next, I want you to picture a spiderweb. The strands are so faint we can barely see them and so fragile we must tend them carefully. Like the spiderweb, your life is a rich tapestry of connections. Each part is necessary for the whole web to stay intact and functional.

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I focus on your relationships and the patterns within them.

my journey

Clinical Insight + Lived Wisdom

When you're looking for a therapist, training is important. But so is compatibility: What's it like to work with them? Will they "get" your story and appreciate who you are? To answer those questions, I want to ask you to think about a familiar children's toy—the one where you put different-shaped blocks into the matching holes in a box. I don't try to smash stars into square holes.

Instead, I meet you exactly as you are—with all your complexity, contradictions, and brilliance. This understanding comes from both professional training and my own lived experience as a survivor of sexual violence. My journey through systems not built for people like me helped teach me to recognize when someone feels unseen, unheard, or misunderstood. I bring this dual perspective to every session, creating an environment where your full truth can unfold without judgment.

My career has taken me through family medicine, nonprofits, community mental health, military settings, and private practice across multiple continents. I've worked with both survivors and perpetrators, overseen military sexual assault prevention programs, been recognized by foreign governments for my work in sexual violence advocacy, and written for publications read by Congress and other governmental officials.

These varied experiences have shaped my understanding of how trauma shows up across cultures and systems. They've also taught me that profound transformation happens not through one-size-fits-all approaches, but through genuine relationships that honor individual complexity.

I'm also someone living with chronic illness and disability, recently diagnosed with a neurological condition that has taught me about slowing down and honoring my own limits. This lived experience with vulnerability deepens my capacity to sit with discomfort and extend unconditional positive regard, even in the most challenging moments.

Because I believe in constant learning and growth for clinicians, I’m currently pursuing my doctorate. But, even more than that, I believe in doing the work myself—walking alongside you on the journey toward well-being and actualization.
